Anderson Quickly Returning To Old Form

Rust? Kevin Anderson doesn't have any rust!

The eighth-seeded South African, playing in first tournament since January, reached the quarter-finals of the Miami Open presented by Itau on Tuesday.

Anderson beat Aussie Jordan Thompson 7-5, 7-5 to reach his third Miami quarter-final (2011, 2018). The 6'8” right-hander lost in the second round of the Australian Open and withdrew from four tournaments because of a right elbow injury.

But the Florida resident has been playing as if he's been at home this fortnight. Anderson fought past Spain's Jaume Munar and Portugal's No. 1 Joao Sousa before ending Thompson's best ATP Masters 1000 run.

The 32-year-old Anderson, who has never reached the Miami semi-finals, will face the winner between fourth seed Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev. Thompson, No. 77 in the ATP Rankings, was playing in his first Masters 1000 fourth round.

The 24-year-old Sydney native beat Cameron Norrie, 10^th seed Karen Khachanov and 24^th seed Grigor Dimitrov to reach the Round of 16.

Thompson led Anderson 4-1 in the first set, but Anderson reeled off six of the next seven. He then broke in the 11^th game of the second set before serving it out.
