Anderson Brushes Past Herbert At Wimbledon

Kevin Anderson found himself at 0/40 in his first service game, but any thoughts that his right elbow injury continues to hamper him were soon extinguished in a commanding win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Monday at The Championships.

Fourth seed Anderson broke serve early in each set to beat Herbert 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 46 minutes, a confidence-boosting win for the South African contesting only his fifth tour-level event of the season.

The 33-year-old, who lost to Novak Djokovic in last year’s Wimbledon final, won 77 per cent of his service points, hitting 40 winners that included 16 aces. Herbert, who will partner Andy Murray in the doubles competition at the All England Club, came into the match with grass-court form, having advanced to the NOVENTI OPEN semi-finals in Halle (l. to Federer) two weeks ago.

Anderson, who picked up the sixth ATP Tour title of his career in January at the Tata Open Maharashtra (d. Karlovic), will next face Janko Tipsarevic, the former World No. 8, who reached the fourth round in 2007 and 2008, or Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan.
