Nadal Moves To Within One 'Big Title' Of Djokovic & Federer
Rafael Nadal has drawn within one ‘Big Title’ of both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer by capturing a fifth Coupe Rogers crown on Sunday. With a 6-3, 6-0 win over Daniil Medvedev in the Montreal final, Nadal has now won 53 ‘Big Titles’, a combination of 18 Grand Slam championships and a record-extending 35 ATP Masters 1000 titles.
The 33-year-old has clinched five titles (or more) at four Masters 1000 tournaments — also Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters (11), the Internazionali BNL d’Italia (nine) and the Mutua Madrid Open (five). The Montreal run marked the first time that Nadal had successfully defended a hard-court title.
“In this sport you are never under full control,” said Nadal, after winning the Montreal title, in an attempt to explain his mindset. “Things change very quick. You play against almost every player when you play Masters 1000s, [and] every single match is tough. Everybody has the potential to cause problems and everybody is dangerous.”

Djokovic and Federer, who return to ATP Tour action this week at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, have both picked up 54 ‘Big Titles’. Federer, the all-time Grand Slam championships leader with 20, still has four more major victories than Djokovic, and the Swiss has celebrated one more Nitto ATP Finals title (six) than the Serbian (five). But Djokovic has won five more Masters 1000 titles (33-28), creating a tie atop the Big Titles leaderboard.
Djokovic has the best ‘Big Title’ conversion rate of the Big Three, winning about one out of every three opportunities (3.3), better than Nadal (3.4) and Federer (4.2).
So far this season, Nadal has compiled an ATP Tour-leading 41 match wins (41-6 overall), including three 'Big Titles' at Rome (d. Djokovic), Roland Garros (d. Thiem) and now Montreal. Djokovic has also won three 'Big Titles' at the Australian Open (d. Nadal), the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Tsitsipas) and at Wimbledon (d. Federer), while Federer won his fourth crown at the Miami Open presented bt Itau in March.
