Nishikori Undergoes Elbow Surgery
After cutting his season short due to injury, Kei Nishikori underwent surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday.
The World No. 8 has not competed since the US Open in August, where he fell to #NextGenATP Australian Alex de Minaur in the third round. Nishikori ends his season with a 29-14 tour-level record, highlighted by his run to the Brisbane International title in January.
The 12-time tour-level titlist’s triumph in Brisbane snapped a nine-match losing streak in ATP Tour finals. Nishikori did not drop a set en route to the championship match, before a three-set victory against Daniil Medvedev. The Japanese star also reached Grand Slam quarter-finals at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon this season.
Nishikori is scheduled to return to action at the inaugural ATP Cup in January. The 29-year-old will be joined in Perth by countryman Yoshihito Nishioka. Japan will compete in Group B alongside Spain and Georgia, with 24 countries aiming to take the title across 10 days of competition.
