Roger-Vasselin/Mahut Save 4 M.P. In Epic Shanghai Showdown

A flick of the wrist saved sixth seeds Edouard Roger-Vasselin/Nicolas Mahut from defeat on Friday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. The French pair saved four match points, the last with an incredible reflex volley winner from Roger-Vasselin, to score a 6-3, 3-6, 18-16 quarter-final victory over Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury.

In the Match Tie-break, Roger-Vasselin/Mahut erased match points at 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and 15/16. A slice forehand from Ram that landed wide wrapped up the match after one hour and 32 minutes. The Frenchmen have won nine of their past 10 matches, taking the title last week in Tokyo (d. Mektic/Skugor) and finishing runner-up in Metz (l. Lindstedt/Struff).

Roger-Vasselin/Mahut will play the winner of second seeds Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo and Ivan Dodig/Filip Polasek. Kubot/Melo will quality for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, held from 10-18 November at The O2 in London, if they defeat Dodig/Polasek.

Eighth seeds Mate Pavic/Bruno Soares didn’t drop serve in a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over top seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal/Robert Farah. Despite the loss, Cabal/Farah can be pleased with clinching the year-end No. 1 ATP Doubles Ranking for the first time as a result of beating John Isner/Sam Querrey on Wednesday.
