Zverev, who leads their series 5-1, served and volleyed and mixed in slices and drop shots to bring Medvedev off the baseline. The fourth-seeded Russian is going for his first Nitto ATP Finals win after an 0-2 start to his season finale debut against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal.

If Zverev beats Medvedev, he will finish second in Group Andre Agassi and face Dominic Thiem on Saturday evening for a place in the final. Stefanos Tsitsipas would win the group and face Roger Federer on Saturday afternoon. Nadal would not advance to the semi-finals.

But if Medvedev wins, Nadal will win the group and face Roger Federer on Saturday, and Tsitsipas will finish second, eliminating Zverev from the tournament.
