Bryans Move Past Cabal/Munar, Into Third Round In Melbourne

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan beat doubles World No. 1 Juan Sebastian Cabal and Jaume Munar 7-6(5), 6-4 to advance to the Australian Open third round on Sunday.

Making their final appearance at Melbourne Park, the six-time champions dropped just two points behind their second serves (12/14) to reach the third round after 87 minutes. The Americans are chasing their first title at the year’s opening Grand Slam since 2013, when they defeated Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling in the championship match.

The Bryans will face fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek for a place in the quarter-finals. The 2019 Nitto ATP Finals qualifiers have not dropped a set en route to the third round.

Marcelo Arevalo and Jonny O’Mara upset home favourite John Peers and Michael Venus 6-4, 7-6(7). The unseeded duo did not face a face a break point during their third-round victory against the seventh seeds.

Australian wild cards James Duckworth and Marc Polmans saved two match points to book their place in the quarter-finals, upsetting 10th seeds Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares 7-6(2), 2-6, 7-6(11-9). From 7/9 down in the Match Tie-break, Duckworth and Polmans won the final four points of the match to advance after two hours and 39 minutes.

The Aussie pairing will face Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukushkin for a semi-final spot. The Kazakhs broke serve on three occasions to beat Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-2.

Duckworth and Polmans were not the only Australian wild cards to reach the quarter-finals. Max Purcell and Luke Saville advanced to the last eight with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph against Andres Molteni and Hugo Nys.
