Nerveless Sandgren Stands Up To Querrey At Australian Open
Tennys Sandgren held his nerve under pressure on Friday to stand one victory away from reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals for the second time in three years (2018).
World No. 100 Sandgren struck 35 winners in a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over fellow American Sam Querrey in one hour and 52 minutes for a place in the fourth round. He will next face Italian No. 12 seed Fabio Fognini or Guido Pella, the No. 22 seed from Argentina.
Sandgren needed to save nine break points in the second set and narrowly edged Querrey overall in rallies of four shots and under — 23 to 19. Querrey fought hard, hitting 15 aces, but was left to rue converting only two of 14 break-point chances and making 43 unforced errors. The former World No. 10 had previously beaten Sandgren 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in the Wimbledon fourth round last year.
Two years ago, Sandgren overcame 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka and World No. 5 Dominic Thiem en route to the Australian Open quarter-finals (l. to Chung).
