Former Champion Gasquet Too Strong For Simon In Montpellier

Three-time former champion Richard Gasquet improved to 9-1 lifetime against fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-4 in 87 minutes on Wednesday at the Open Sud de France. It was Gasquet’s 25th win in 30 matches at the ATP 250-level tournament and he’ll next take on 38-year-old Feliciano Lopez, who overcame eighth seed and ASB Classic champion Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-1 in 69 minutes.

Earlier in the day, Adrian Mannarino broke a three-match losing streak. The World No. 45 came within two points of a straight-sets victory, but eventually worked his way to a 6-0, 6-7(7), 6-0 victory over Alexei Popyrin in one hour and 55 minutes. Mannarino, who lost only nine points in the first set, got to 5/5 in the tie-break, prior to Popyrin converting his third set point. He’ll now face fellow Frenchman, Gael Monfils, the top seed at the ATP 250-level tournament.

Later today, third seed Denis Shapovalov faces fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil and fourth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov meets Gregoire Barrere of France.
