Resurfaced: Del Potro Comes To Ballgirl's Rescue In Rome
Editor's Note: ATPTour.com is resurfacing features to bring fans closer to their favourite players during the current suspension in tournament play. This story was originally published on 16 May 2019.
Thursday was a busy day for Juan Martin del Potro and many players on the ATP Tour who had to play two matches at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. But the 'Tower of Tandil' still found time to help a ballgirl during his straight-sets win against #NextGenATP Norwegian Casper Ruud.
Ruud, a finalist in Houston earlier this year, missed a topspin backhand that bounced high into a bush at the back of Del Potro's side of the court at 2-1 in the first set. A ballgirl tried jumping to secure the ball, but could not reach it. So Del Potro walked over, looked at the ballgirl and as he cracked a smile, handed it to her. The seventh-seeded Argentine triumphed 6-4, 6-4, and is into his second quarter-final of the season in just his third tournament of 2019.
