Cabal & Farah's US Open Title Defence Off To A Good Start
Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah began their US Open title defence on Thursday, defeating Jurgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-3 in one hour.
The top-seeded Colombians hit nine aces and won 80 per cent of their service points to triumph without facing a break point. They will next face long-time rivals Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, who rallied past Marcelo Arevalo and Jonny O’Mara 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4.
Rojer and Tecau hold a 6-4 ATP Head2Head record against Cabal and Farah, including a win in the group stages of last year’s Nitto ATP Finals. But the Colombians outlasted the Dutch-Romanian team 11-9 in the fifth set of last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals, eventually winning their first Grand Slam title two matches later.
In other action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, reigning Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies battled past 2020 Australian Open finalists Max Purcell and Luke Saville 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-4.
The Germans made the semi-finals of last year’s US Open. Krawietz and Mies have shown good form since the ATP Tour returned last week, reaching the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open.
