Schwartzman Beats Defending Champion Cilic At Queens Club; Anderson Falls

Diego Schwartzman played with too much variety to upset two-time champion Marin Cilic on Thursday at the Fever-Tree Championships.

Coming into the week, Schwartzman was 1-8 lifetime on grass-court but moved into his first ATP Tour quarter-final on the surface with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the fifth-seeded Croatian in 83 minutes at The Queen’s Club.

Cilic recovered from 1-3 down in the first set, but Schwartzman won four straight games from 4-4 to take a 2-0 advantage in the second set. Schwartzman, currently No. 23 in the ATP Rankings, hit a volley winner to complete his 21st victory of 2019. Defending champion Cilic, who is now 10-9 on the season, committed 19 of his 30 unforced errors on his forehand.

Schwartzman will now play fourth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev or Lucas Pouille of France in Friday’s last eight.

Gilles Simon withstood 18 aces from the big-serving second seed Kevin Anderson in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over two hours and four minutes. Anderson, who has been limited to just three tournaments in the first five months of the year, beat Simon in the 2015 semi-finals at the ATP 500 tournament.

The French veteran, who won the first five games against Anderson on a brighter day in London, now faces seventh-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka or 2007 finalist and compatriot Nicolas Mahut, a qualifier, who lost to Andy Roddick in the 2007 final.
