Cervara Named 2019 Coach Of The Year

Gilles Cervara, Daniil Medvedev’s coach, has been chosen by his peers as Coach Of The Year in the 2019 ATP Awards. The award, which was introduced in 2016, honours the coach who helped guide their player to a higher level of performance during the season.

Earlier this year, Cervara said coaching Medvedev could be similar to managing an artist. “Sometimes you just don't understand them. They see, they feel stuff that you don't even understand,” he told ATPTour.com. “You have to understand that they can see or feel this, and you have to trust them also. And with him, that's what I feel.”

Cervara guided the 23-year-old Russian to an ATP Tour-best 59 match wins, 46 hard-court wins and nine final appearances in 2019, in addition to a career-high. ATP Ranking of No. 4. Medvedev also reached his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open and clinched his debut appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals.

"My team is a big part of my success,” said Medvedev at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, before he went on to reach his sixth straight tour-level final and win his second straight Masters 1000 title.

The 38-year-old Cervara, a native of Cannes, was selected as the winner from a shortlist that included Nicolas Massu (Dominic Thiem), Carlos Moya (Rafael Nadal), Vincenzo Santopadre (Matteo Berrettini) and Apostolos Tsitsipas (Stefanos Tsitsipas).
